As part of the cooperation initiated in 2024 within the framework of the MistoMatch program between the town of Sorbiers and the Ukrainian city of Burshtyn, a first concrete action took place this summer: a respite stay for Ukrainian families, hosted by residents of Sorbiers and the surrounding area.

From June 27 to July 2, 13 children aged 8 to 16, accompanied by 8 mothers, 1 father, a doctor, and 2 drivers, were warmly hosted by 11 volunteer families. This meaningful moment aimed to offer a few days of respite, cultural discovery, and human connection, far from the daily struggles caused by the war.

You have no idea how much this wonderful week spent with you has helped me. I have received very positive feedback from children who came together as one big family without borders.

A week full of activities and emotions:

  • Tree climbing in Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds, in partnership with Amitié Loire Ukraine

  • Open-air sound and light show “Les Misérables,” prepared by local musicians and choirs

  • Friendly picnic and hike on the Pilat hills

  • Trip to Haute-Loire with a visit to a medieval castle and a falconry show

  • Shared meal with the Sorbiers Social Center, prepared together by Ukrainians and members

  • Visit to the stadium and museum of the Verts football club

  • Relaxing moments swimming, both in families and at the intercommunal pool

The stay ended with an emotional farewell party, featuring an orchestra, dancing, and many heartfelt exchanges.

This initiative, driven by committed and supportive citizens, the city of Sorbiers, the twinning committee and the Mayor Marie-Christine Thivant, marks a first concrete and human step in the young cooperation between Sorbiers and Burshtyn.
