Today, Ukraine celebrates the 33rd anniversary of its historic self-determination referendum <\/b>held on <\/span>December 1, 1991<\/b>. On that day, an overwhelming <\/span>92% of voters<\/b>, representing 84% of the electorate, <\/span>supported independence<\/b>. This moment marked a turning point in the country’s history after decades of Soviet domination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A few months earlier, on <\/span>August 24, 1991<\/b>, <\/span>Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada<\/b>, had adopted the <\/span>Declaration of Independence Act<\/b>. This document proclaimed the <\/span>creation of a sovereign and democratic Ukrainian state<\/b> and called for a referendum to seek direct approval from the electorate. The results of the December 1 vote were unequivocal, with majorities in favor of independence in every region of Ukraine, including <\/span>Donetsk and Luhansk, where 84% voted for independence<\/b>, and even in <\/span>Crimea, where 54% approved<\/b>. This broad consensus reflected a profound national desire to forge an independent future.\u00a0 \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The following day, <\/span>the international community, including Russia, recognized Ukraine’s independence<\/b>. This referendum solidified Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and marked the <\/span>dissolution of the Soviet Union<\/b>. In <\/span>1994<\/b>, Ukraine signed the <\/span>Budapest Memorandum with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia<\/b>, which guaranteed <\/span>Ukraine’s territorial integrity <\/b>and security in exchange for its ratification of the <\/span>Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons<\/b>. This international agreement was meant to protect Ukraine from any external threats or aggression.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, these <\/span>guarantees were violated starting in 2014<\/b>, when <\/span>Russia illegally annexed Crimea and invaded parts of the Donbas region<\/b>. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 marked a tragic escalation, bringing <\/span>massive destruction, significant loss of life\u2014including many civilians\u2014and the displacement of millions<\/b>. In response, an <\/span>unprecedented international mobilization has arisen<\/b> to support Ukraine in its courageous fight to <\/span>uphold its sovereignty and defend its inalienable right to freedom<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Ukraine commemorates this anniversary, <\/span>it reminds the world of the importance of respecting the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty<\/b>.
